About Sirenia
The Scientific order, Sirenia, is comprised of manatees, dugongs, and sea cows. Increased attention to manatee conservation paid off in 2018 when population numbers experienced a fivefold increase. While most manatee species have officially been delisted from “Endangered” to “Threatened”, they all still face threats such as boat strikes, algae blooms, and entanglement. A 2017 study showed that over 20 years, 11% of deceased manatees studied had ingested trash or shown signs of entanglement.
